Develop your photography skills with a trip to the amazing Isle of Skye.
You’ll get to explore and photograph this wonderful island with
John Farnan
About the Tutor:
John takes a studied approach, often captured through beautiful long exposure imagery,
particularly in monochrome.
John is an experience tutor who explains how to feel and convey the emotion of the image
Where we go:
On this 4 day (4 night) trip you’ll see many of the islands familiar locations, which John will encourage you to fully explore.
This will not be a trip where you arrive and take the ‘classic shot’.
All of these locations have many facets which can only be fully explored by taking your time and understanding what makes this landscape so special.
You’ll also be able to explore the lesser known locations; those that are suddenly transformed through a striking moment of light, a special moment under the night sky or just a simple photographic composition that encapsulates what makes the island unique.
On each day we will spend the most time on location to make the most from the ever changing light that the island has to offer.
Where we stay:
This whitewashed cottage in the amazing location at the foot of the Cuillin Mountains.
More great highlights of the Trip:
One of the great aspects of Skye is that so many of the great locations are so accessible.
The old Man of Storr,
Our Itinerary:
We just offer a guide to locations at this stage as it’s subject to change depending on the weather and time of year we go. However, during the workshop we’ll explore the amazing range of landscapes that the island has to offer; for example Sligachan and the Cuillin range of mountains; Portree and the Old Man of Storr, the coastline and clifftops at Elgol; the stunning landscape of the Quiraing and the Trotternish ridge and the west coast of the island from Uig to Dunvegan.
What you’ll learn:
Whatever your existing level of knowledge and experience, the workshop offers expert tuition in both the technical and creative aspects of photography and will enable you to create images you’ve always wanted. We offer learning in the latest techniques in digital photography, using photoshop and Lightroom at the end of the course to process and print your best images.
You might even get to meet the famous Elgol coos, they tend to hang out on the beach looking for old rope and seaweed to chew on.
Finally, although our courses are essentially outdoor or ‘landscape’ based, any course participant needing advice on any other aspect or subject in photography need only ask and John will do his best to help and if possible allow time for you to practise your preference or issue during the course
The Tour includes:
- All expert tuition and guidance by John Farnan.
- Accommodation at the wonderful Allt Dearg Cottage.
- Transfers from Kyle of Lochalsh or Portree if required

The Tour excludes:

About me:
John Farnan
John has a long history of coaching and mentoring and producing striking imagery with both traditional (film) & digital mediums. John specialises in bold monochrome images in both short & long exposure. If you want to produce statement images or just learn from pre-visualisation to the final dodging and burning of black & white images he will guide you through the process. At home on the streets of Glasgow with a Twin Lens Reflex, or in the stunning grand vistas of the Scottish Highlands with a 4×5 field camera, he will guide you through the basics on to the more advanced techniques, promising never to bamboozle you with elaborate technical terms Johns main focus is on capturing the feeling of the moment and effectively transferring this emotion to the final image.
